Materials:
SeaCell™ - Processed Icelandic Brown Seaweed
Lyocell - Regenerated Tree Cellulose
Origin of seaweed: Iceland
Origin of trees: Europe
Spun into yarn: Tuscany, Italy
Certificates: FSC, OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100
- Our SeaCell™ fibre contains 18% seaweed within the fibres.
- The seaweed used is grown within a unique ecosystem in the Icelandic fjords, where it grows naturally and is harvested in a sustainable and careful manner. Only the top of the plant is cut, allowing the remainder to continue growing and be recut after it has fully grown.
- SeaCell™ is very skin-friendly and moisture regulating, making the fabric ideal for hot summers.
- SeaCell™ is considered 100% biodegradable and compostable, though the decomposition rate and method may be influenced by synthetic additives.
- At DUALLE, we blend this seaweed fibre with regenerated tree cellulose, a man-made fibre that can be spun into yarn and fabrics.
- Our tree cellulose is made out of the extracted and processed cellulose from primarily timber wood grown in vast European forests.
- This regenerated cellulose is given different names depending on how it is produced or who produced it: viscose, lyocell, modal, ryon.
- Demand for viscose is expected to double over the next eight years, increasing pressure on deforestation. At DUALLE, we choose FSC-certified viscose to promote deforestation-free practices, support biodiversity, and protect local communities.
- We use the Lyocell method over Viscose as it reuses chemicals, closing the loop and mitigating viscose's adverse processes.
- Our special blend not only allows us to use more responsibly processed materials with lesser environmental impact, but the addition of SeaCell™ fibres lends our textile material a soft, silky feel and provides maximum levels of comfort.
- Our yarn is OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified, which ensures that our textiles are free from harmful substances and guarantees their safety for human health.
- We add a small percentage of Elastane to provide a comfortable amount of elasticity and durability.
Method: Cold dyeing
Dyed in: Aosta Valley, Italy
- We use a new, innovative cold dyeing method to dye the majority of our textiles in a small atelier in the Italian Alps.
- Our innovative method involves very low water consumption, using up to five times less water than warm dyeing.
- The process uses minimal energy since it avoids prolonged heating; yarn and garments are aired at room temperature.
- The dye bath can be reused multiple times.
- Only natural ingredients, such as different trees, plants, roots, fruits are used in our dyes.
- Our drying process can take up to three weeks, depending on weather conditions, making it longer than warm dyeing methods.
- The absorption of colour in our natural fibres is much stronger due to the extended drying time in the open.
- Our yarns and textiles achieve the highest scores in standardised dyeing tests (ISO Standards) for sun exposure, friction, and wash fastness.
- The ingredients used in the dyes have antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-moth, and anti-UV properties.
- Over time, our natural dyes can feel beneficial on the skin, especially for sensitive skin, and promote comfort through odour control.
- Deep black and white are the most challenging colors to achieve with natural dyes, with no current textile industry solutions. Thus, we use an eco dye process for these colors, which is more responsible than traditional methods in terms of resource use and environmental impact.
- Large-scale production for natural dyes and their long processing times are still a hurdle in the textile industry and more research is required to promote wider adoption and more cost-efficient solutions.
Recommended to wash at 30°C in DUALLE’s laundry bag with mild detergent, eco-labelled if possible.
