Material: Silk Twill 14 Momme
Spun into yarn: Lake Como, Italy
Certificates: Independently tested for harmful substances by SILK PRO S.R.L., ISO 24362-3,2014
- Silk is a natural protein fibre produced by silkworms. A single silkworm cocoon can contain up to 1 mile (1.6 km) of silk fibre.
- Silkworms spin cocoons, which are harvested, and the silk fibres are reeled and spun.
- We source the highest-grade silk from SILK PRO S.R.L based near lake Como which are treated and spun into yarn following ISO Standard directives (ISO 24362-3,2014), meaning no harmful chemicals are used in its production.
- At DUALLE, we source a special type of silk called Silk Twill 14 Momme.
- Silk twill is a weave pattern characterised by its distinct diagonal rib pattern, known as a twill weave. This is achieved by weaving the silk threads in a specific over-and-under pattern that creates the diagonal lines.
- This twill weave gives the fabric a smooth, lustrous surface with excellent drape and it's less prone to wrinkling compared to plain weaves and has a subtle sheen. The scarf gets this luxurious feel.
- 14 Momme is a measurement used to denote the weight of silk fabric. It reflects the density and thickness of the silk—the higher the momme, the heavier and more opaque the fabric.
- Our 14 momme silk is considered medium-weight. It's heavier than lightweight silks (like 8-12 momme) but lighter than heavy silks (like 19-30 momme). This offers a good balance between delicacy and strength. It's durable enough for regular use while maintaining a soft and elegant feel.
- Our silk weight also provides moderate opacity, which is suitable for our scarves as it allows for vibrant natural color display without being too sheer.
- The fabric will drape elegantly around the neck or shoulders, providing comfort and style.
Method: Cold dyeing
Dyed in: Aosta Valley, Italy
- We use a new, innovative cold dyeing method to dye the majority of our textiles in a small atelier in the Italian Alps.
- Our innovative method involves very low water consumption, using up to five times less water than warm dyeing.
- The process uses minimal energy since it avoids prolonged heating; yarn and garments are aired at room temperature.
- The dye bath can be reused multiple times.
- Only natural ingredients, such as different trees, plants, roots, fruits are used in our dyes.
- Our drying process can take up to three weeks, depending on weather conditions, making it longer than warm dyeing methods.
- The absorption of colour in our natural fibres is much stronger due to the extended drying time in the open.
- Our yarns and textiles achieve the highest scores in standardised dyeing tests (ISO Standards) for sun exposure, friction, and wash fastness.
- The ingredients used in the dyes have antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-moth, and anti-UV properties.
- Over time, our natural dyes can feel beneficial on the skin, especially for sensitive skin, and promote comfort through odour control.
- Deep black and white are the most challenging colors to achieve with natural dyes, with no current textile industry solutions. Thus, we use an eco dye process for these colors, which is more responsible than traditional methods in terms of resource use and environmental impact.
- Large-scale production for natural dyes and their long processing times are still a hurdle in the textile industry and more research is required to promote wider adoption and more cost-efficient solutions.
Recommended to wash at 30°C in DUALLE’s laundry bag with mild detergent, eco-labelled if possible.
Dry in shadow.
